One of the quieter things I loved building into Dragon Kings of Broken Light was the Book of Kaia — a sentient piece of magic that’s been asleep for five hundred years. Partway through the story it wakes and starts speaking for itself, and from that point on, every chapter opens with a line from it.
This is one of those lines, and it’s stayed with me since I wrote it: “A heart remembers what a mind forgets. But a heart forgets what a mind remembers.”
