Author Q&A: What inspired The Dragon Kings of Broken Light?

I was reading the Divine Pymander — Hermes Trismegistus — and became fascinated by the vast winged dragon of Hermes’ inner wilderness. After mentioning it to a friend, she challenged me to put that energy toward writing a Dragon Romantasy.

As a genre bender, I decided to give it a shot. But that’s not what happened.

Dragon Kings does include soul vows and bonded mates — but this book turned into something so much more. It has a real metaphysical and philosophical foundation, and an element of discovery that first-time readers will enjoy, while second and third-time readers experience it completely differently.

In hindsight, I can see how those Hermetic concepts influenced the story’s trajectory — my subconscious connecting ideas that just spilled onto the page. And like with every book, I learned a lot along the journey. I hope you find it just as rewarding.
